One of the key issues Georgia leaders are interested in on their trip to Israel is cybersecurity – a booming industry in Georgia but one where Israel leads the world. Gov. Brian Kemp, along with Senate Majority Leader John Kennedy and House Speaker Jon Burns, were in the desert city of Beersheba this week to tour the city’s hi-tech cybersecurity center and learn about advancements made by the Israeli Cyber Emergency Response Team. The trip will pay dividends when they return stateside, particularly for the Georgia Cyber Center outside Augusta which hopes to develop partnerships with Israel as it continues to grow into the premier cybersecurity hub of North America. Mercer hack exposes nearly 100,000
Georgia is the cybersecurity capital of the Southeast – and possibly of the entire U.S. – but it is far from safe from cyber attacks. Mercer University, in Macon, is the target of two federal lawsuits alleging that the school did not do enough to keep personal information safe ahead of a major data breach that led to more than 93,000 people having their personal data leaked online. The hack occurred in February but individuals were notified in May that their personal information, including Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers may have been compromised. One suit says the attack was “highly foreseeable” and that the school didn’t do enough to prevent it, and was too slow to alert individuals who had their information leaked.
