Literacy in Georgia became a top priority among lawmakers during the 2023 session of the General Assembly. Several bills aimed at addressing the issue were introduced, but one crossed the finish line and established the Georgia Council on Literacy – SB 211 by Sen. Billy Hickman, R-Statesboro.
The bill was signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp recently, and the council took another step forward Tuesday when Lt. Gov. Burt Jones named several appointees to serve on the 30-member council.
