Named in honor of Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife, Julia, the fort is home to some 70,000 soldiers and civilian workers, as well as the Army Ranger School, the elite forces of the U.S. Army. The name is the first time a base has been named in honor of a couple, something the family insisted upon.
