The Appalachian Region Commission last week announced it will spend more than $1 billion over the next five years across its 13 state purview as part of the Appalachian Regional Initiative.  The initiative is part of the $1.2 trillion federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and will go toward projects facing the Appalachian region as a whole, that “are strategic, impactful, collaborative, and sustainable.”  Much of North Georgia north of Atlanta is included as part of the region, and has worked with state officials on issues including rural broadband and confronting the opioid epidemic.
