Nearly a century ago, . U.S. Sen. Richard Russell pushed for the Kettle Creek Battlefield, in Wilkes County east of Athens, to be designated a national park. Kettle Creek was the site of a major victory by U.S. forces against the British in the Revolutionary War in 1779. That effort stalled, but now the site is finally getting the recognition it deserves, being named an “affiliated area” of the National Park Service, U.S. Rep Jody Hice (R-Greensboro) announced Monday. That makes it eligible for federal assistance, but will keep its management under local control. The designation will ensure that the historic site will be maintained for future generations, which Hice says is “an enormous win.”
