Leaders of both the House and Senate went into the 2020 Legislative session looking for ways to address maternal mortality in Georgia. The maternal mortality rate in the United States is among the highest in the developed world, and Georgia ranks among the worst of U.S. states for maternal deaths consistently. About two-thirds of those fatalities in Georgia happen in the weeks and months after mothers give birth, according to a state study, and African Americans, rural residents and women over 35 are particularly vulnerable.
