The fifth annual Veterans Memorial 5K and Military Appreciation Celebration, hosted by American Legion Post 29, is scheduled for Saturday, May 25th from 7:30 am to 1:00pm starting on the historic Marietta Square.
Now something of a Cobb County tradition in its fifth year, the event raises awareness of veterans issues and needs in Marietta and Cobb County and raises money to assist the veterans charities supported by the American Legion Post 29. Charity groups supported by the event include the Georgia National Guard Foundation, the Shepherd’s Men SHARE Military Initiative at the Shepherd Spinal Clinic in Atlanta, and the Service Office of the American Legion Post 29. One hundred percent of money raised goes towards charity, and over the past four years the American Legion group has raised more than $240,000.
Representatives from the the Georgia Army National Guard will also be on hand on race day, simulcasting troops from the Georgia National Guard and Georgia Army National Guard that are deployed in Afghanistan running the Veterans Memorial 5K at the same time as the race in Marietta! Following the race is the Military Appreciation Celebration, featuring speakers including Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, head of the National Guard for the State of Georgia, and Cobb County Commission Chairman Mike Boyce, as well as a concert by the Georgia Symphony Orchestra.
Cost of the 5K is $35 through May 23rd and $40 on race day (cash or check only) . This event is an AJC Peachtree Road Race Official Qualifying Event.
Leading up to the race American Legion Post 29 is also hosting a concert by folk legends Banks and Shane at the Strand Theatre in Marietta. The concert is this Thursday, May 16th, at 8:00pm, and tickets can be purchased HERE.
