Governor Brian Kemp had until May 12 to decide the fate of any bills or resolutions passed during this year’s legislative session. To the surprise of some, he vetoed 14, as well as a number of line items in the FY 2020 budget.
Citing “local control” as his deciding factor, Kemp vetoed HB 83 which would have required elementary schools give students recess, suggesting at least 30 minutes. It also stated that teachers and schools could not withhold recess as a disciplinary or academic punishment.
