Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, once a co-chair of the Democratic National Convention’s platform committee, issued a strong endorsement of independent candidate Mary Norwood over Democrat Keisha Bottoms in the Dec. 5th Atlanta mayoral runoff. There has been an unbroken reign of black mayors in Atlanta since 1974, yet she broke with an African-American political “old guard” who simply want to continue having a black mayor– in this instance, Bottoms. Franklin also blasts the state Democratic Party for financially supporting Bottoms in a “non-partisan” race. “The party might be better dedicating their resources — reputation, time and money — rebuilding the party county by county,” she says.
