Don’t worry, “knees up” is not an unprintable slang. According to Oxford, it is a British term that means a “lively party or gathering.” And this weekend in Atlanta, for the first time, there will be a number of parties around town for BritWeek. BritWeek began more than a decade ago in Los Angeles but is making its Atlanta debut this year.

BritWeek is a celebration of British business, culture and innovation started by the U.K. Department of International Trade. This year, the event will be held in a few cities – Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Orange County – in addition to Atlanta. It was started by the then Consul General in 2007 “to highlight the creative fusion” between the U.K. and California. It was formed to help educate the public about the British contributions to California and the U.S. The 1st Annual BritWeek in Atlanta is held in collaboration with the British Consulate-General, the GREAT Campaign (a Chamber of Commerce-style promotion campaign) and the British-American Business Council (BABC) of Georgia.
